Immediate Past Commander, Robert Masten. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: John Ray, Rick Trent, Jack Masten, and all Post officers. MEETINGS: 9 were held at The Egg & I and one at Earl Abels. All meetings had a quorum. Attendance averaged 21 members and 4 guests. The highest was 25 members in Mar 2017 and 8 guests in Sep 2016. MEMBERSHIP: The Post finished its membership drive with 236 members or 95% of goal 249. ANNUAL DUES: $40 distributed as follows: $9 Post / $12.50 Department / $18.50 National. FINANCE: The Audit Committee conducted its annual audit and found no exceptions. A $10,000 surety bond with Old Republic was renewed to cover all Post officers. IRS Form 990 Not-for-Profit Annual Report was filed online with zero tax liability. Three signors are on the account: Cmdr, Adjutant, & 1st Vice Cmdr. BOYS STATE: Post 10 sponsored 17 boys this year; Reagan (2), Johnson (5), Churchill (6), San Antonio Christian (1), Antonian (2), and Health Careers (1). Post members funded 11 boys, parents 2, and Churchill paid for 4. Registration was $295 per boy + $35 for expenses. To be eligible, they must be juniors in high school and be recommended by their counselors. Each boy then completes a Boys State application online that includes an essay as to why he wants to attend the program. All applicants are then interviewed and assigned a numerical score. Depending on available funds, those with the highest scores are selected. JROTC: American Legion medals for Military and Scholastic Excellence were awarded by the following Post members: Tom Aslakson, Churchill; Mike McCuan, Johnson; and Burt Quintanilla, Reagan. The JROTC Commandant from each High School selects two cadets to be awarded the medals. ORATORICAL CONTEST: The Post held its contest in which Catherine Ando (Reagan) and Angel Randall (Johnson) were winners. They competed in the 20th District contest, but did not advance. VETERANS ROLL CALL: The 8th annual reading was held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on 5/27/17. Approximately 2,491 veterans were interned since the last reading and were recognized by name, rank, and branch of service. The 20th District was represented by 7 Posts with a total of 40 readers that included a member from Post 177 in Fairfax, VA. Post 10 had 7 members participate. The event drew media coverage from CBS Channel 5 and the San Antonio Express News. COMMUNITY EVENTS: Post members volunteered at the VA Hospital and FSH Medical Museum. We contributed funds to the NEF and other veteran support organizations. Members volunteered at the annual BBQ held at the Fisher House in FSH. Several donated to the blood bank. For the first time, members rode vintage jeeps in the city’s Veterans Day Parade. The vehicles were arranged by member Daniel Martin. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: Rick Trent, Jack W. Masten, Hector Davila, Tom Ullmann, Richard Lee, and Post 10 Officers. MEETINGS: Twelve membership meetings are planned between Jul 2017 and Jun 2018. The monthly Post newsletter will have all the details. Meetings are scheduled at Sabrositas Mexican Restaurant in Stone Oak. They will take place on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 0800 to 0930. Everyone will order their own breakfast from a menu and receive a 10% military discount. All member guests are welcome. (1) MEMBERSHIP goal will be to exceed 100%. (2) DUES will remain at $40.00 per year. (3) THE ANNUAL VETERANS ROLL CALL will be held in May 2018. (4) BOYS STATE, ORATORICAL, & JROTC programs will continue. (5) THE POST will contribute to veteran causes vetted and approved by the membership. Post members will participate in the city Veterans Day Parade downtown. It will encourage volunteering for veteran programs & participation in other community events.
